Not a lot is going on. We’ve had quite a few therapists come out. The occupational therapist came by, but he said he didn’t need to do a lot with Grandma right now. Speech came out, which I was happy about. She’s awfully nice. I learned about the only bone that’s not connected to any other bone (can you guess what it is?).
For a while, we were getting three cans of food in Grandma (out of four, which was a great start). Now we can barely get in two. She just can’t handle “lunch.” She does fine with the medicine though. She sleeps a lot, which Mom and I knew was going to happen. We just didn’t think she’d still be sleeping.
As for her cold, well, here’s the problem: she has congestion, but because of her throat muscles weakening, she can’t get the phlegm to come up into her mouth (I know, that sounds gross). But, that’s the trouble with ALS. We went to see Grandma’s physician, and she said that we just have to wait it out. Hopefully it will dry up, she said. Grandma just has to do a lot of deep breathing so she doesn’t get pneumonia.
Her breathing is not doing well. She can’t even swallow water anymore. Life is very hard for her. But, she’s still alive, she’s still walking and talking and smiling and cracking jokes. She just did physical therapy today, and the therapist was happy with how much she did.
Well, that’s all. Talk to you next week.
